Privacy notice

AmeriCorps Compliance Central is published by America Learns. This notice explains what personal information the site collects, why we have it, and what you can ask us to do with it. It's written for everyone, and it includes the specific rights people have under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA.

What we collect, and why

• Newsletter sign-ups. Your name and email address, so we can send the weekly digest of new articles and guides. Legal basis: your consent.
• Reader accounts. Your email address, and a display name if you give one, so you can sign in, suggest edits, and send us article ideas. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email address and name from them — not your password. Legal basis: performance of the service you asked for.
• Reader notes and suggested corrections. The text you highlight, your comment, and your account email, so we can review the suggestion and reply. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the material accurate.
• Article ideas you send us. The topic you suggest, the category you pick, your note about what you're running into, and your account name and email, so we can consider it and follow up. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in covering what readers need.
• Email you send us. Whatever you write, read by a person and kept only as long as needed to answer you.

We don't run advertising, we don't build profiles, and we don't make automated decisions about you.

How we use AI, and what it sees

Reader notes and article ideas are reviewed with the help of AI language models before a person makes the call. When that happens, the text of your note or idea is sent to our AI providers for analysis. Nothing goes live and nothing is changed on the site without a human editor approving it. We ask you not to include personal or confidential program information in a note or idea, and we don't use your submissions to train AI models.

Cookies and similar technology

We use only strictly necessary cookies. If you sign in, your browser stores a session token so you stay signed in. That's it. We don't set analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies, and we don't use any technology that watches you from site to site.

Who else sees your information

We use a small number of service providers to run the site and send email — hosting and database infrastructure, an email delivery provider, the sign-in providers you choose to use (Google or Apple), and the AI providers described above. They process information only on our instructions. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We'll disclose information if the law genuinely requires it.

Our providers may process data in the United States. Where information is transferred out of the EEA or the UK, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (with the UK Addendum where applicable).

How long we keep it

Newsletter records are kept until you unsubscribe, plus a short period to honor the unsubscribe. Account records, reader notes, and article ideas are kept while your account is open and deleted on request — though if a note led to a correction, the corrected article itself stays up without your name attached. Email correspondence is kept while it's useful for answering you.

Your rights

If you're in the EEA or the UK: you can ask for access to your data, a copy in a portable format, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, or you can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time — every digest email has a one-click unsubscribe link — and that doesn't affect what happened before you withdrew. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.

If you're in California: you can ask what personal information we've collected about you and where it came from, ask us to delete it, ask us to correct it, and receive equal service either way. Because we don't sell or share personal information, and don't use sensitive personal information for inferring characteristics, there's nothing to opt out of — but you're welcome to confirm that with us in writing.

To exercise any of these rights, email gary@americalearns.net with what you'd like us to do. We'll verify the request against the email address on file and reply within 30 days (45 days for California requests, extendable once if we tell you why). An authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf with your written permission.

Children

This site is written for adults working in national service programs. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child gave us information, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this notice changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and, for anything significant, say so in the newsletter.
